A recent study has highlighted the impact of dust storm particulate matter (PM) on inflammatory immune responses, particularly in individuals with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).
Researchers exposed peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from STEMI patients and healthy individuals to varying concentrations of PM (0, 10, and 100 µg/mL) over 24 to 48 hours.

The findings suggest that exposure to dust storm PM may exacerbate cardiovascular risks, particularly for individuals already suffering from conditions like STEMI. The pro-inflammatory response at moderate PM levels could worsen existing health conditions, while the immune suppression observed at higher concentrations may increase susceptibility to infections.
