Union Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized on June 20, 2026, that the Indian government is closely monitoring the evolving El Nino conditions, which are impacting water supply and agriculture.
The government has pledged to take all necessary measures to address potential challenges, including safeguarding farmers' interests.

Why It's Important?

The strengthening El Nino conditions pose significant risks to India's agricultural sector, particularly in key states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Bihar, which are experiencing deficient rainfall. This uneven rainfall distribution has led to reduced sowing activity for pulses and oilseeds, potentially impacting food security and farmer livelihoods. Water supply challenges may also arise, further straining resources in affected regions. However, increased acreage in rice and coarse cereals offers some relief, mitigating the overall impact on the agricultural sector.
