Indiana Issues Statewide Air Quality Alert Due to Rising Ozone Levels
US · Published Jun 5, 2026
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has issued an Air Quality Action Day across nearly the entire state of Indiana, affecting approximately 7 million residents.
The alert, effective until midnight local time on June 4, 2026, warns of ozone pollution levels reaching the 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' range.

Why It's Important?

The primary risk is to sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma, who may experience adverse health effects from elevated ozone levels. Prolonged outdoor exposure is discouraged for these populations. A Code Orange alert has also been issued in parts of southern Indiana, indicating potential health impacts for sensitive groups. While the general public is less likely to be affected, caution is advised. The alert highlights the role of vehicle emissions and industrial pollutants in exacerbating air quality issues, particularly in densely populated areas.
