Severe Water Shortage Forces Maharashtra Farmer to Uproot 1,000 Sweet Lime Trees
IN · Published Oct 28, 2026
• A severe water crisis in Maharashtra's Jalna district has led a farmer, Ganesh Waghmare, to uproot approximately 1,000 sweet lime trees from his seven-acre orchard in Rahera, Ghansawangi tehsil.
• The orchard, planted in 2014, succumbed to a lack of rainfall this year, which caused water levels in local wells and borewells to plummet.

Impact & Risks

The water shortage has caused significant financial losses for Waghmare, who had invested heavily in fertilisers, pesticides, labour, and water over 12 years. The destruction of his orchard has wiped out a critical source of income for his family. Other farmers in Ghansawangi tehsil face similar risks, with orchards requiring years to mature now at risk of drying up. Without immediate intervention, the crisis could deepen, exacerbating the financial strain on farming families and threatening the region's agricultural economy.
