NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, in collaboration with the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies, has integrated data from small uncrewed aircraft systems into its Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System (HAFS).
This innovation has improved hurricane intensity forecast accuracy by 10%.

The improved forecasting tools are expected to benefit regions prone to hurricanes, particularly in the Caribbean and the southeastern United States. While the 2026 season is forecasted to be below normal, even a single major hurricane can cause significant damage, as seen with Hurricane Melissa's Category 5 landfall in Jamaica in 2025. Enhanced intensity forecasts can provide critical lead time for decision-makers, but the effectiveness of these tools depends on how quickly warnings translate into action. Delays in response, such as approving evacuations or securing infrastructure, could negate the benefits of improved forecasts.
