India Launches First Hydrogen-Powered Train to Boost Clean Energy
IN · Published Jul 17, 2026
India has introduced its first indigenously built hydrogen-powered train, named the 'NaMo Green Rail,' as part of its efforts to expand clean energy usage in its railway network.
The train, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, 2026, at Jind railway station in Haryana, consists of two hydrogen-powered driving cars and eight passenger coaches.

Impact & Risks

The hydrogen-powered train is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, as it produces only water vapor as a byproduct. This development could pave the way for replacing diesel-powered trains on non-electrified routes, contributing to India's sustainability goals. However, the success of the pilot project will depend on the efficiency and scalability of hydrogen technology in the Indian context. Challenges such as high initial costs and the need for extensive infrastructure development could pose risks to widespread adoption.
