Deep Depression in Bay of Bengal to Make Landfall Without Intensifying into Cyclone
• A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is forecasted to make landfall along the north Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast on the night of 23 September
• According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system, located 60 km southeast of Kalingapatnam as of 8:30 am IST on 23 September, is moving west-northwestwards at 5 kmph. It is expected to cross the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, near Kalingapatnam, retaining its status as a deep depression rather than intensifying into a cyclonic storm. The system is being closely monitored by the Doppler Weather Radar in Visakhapatnam.
Impact & Risks
Despite not intensifying into a cyclone, the deep depression is expected to bring significant rainfall and rough sea conditions. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted across Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations in south Odisha and coastal Andhra Pradesh on 23 and 24 September. Sea conditions over the westcentral and northwest Bay of Bengal are likely to remain very rough until the evening of 24 September, posing risks to maritime activities. Coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal may also experience rough to very rough sea conditions during this period.
