IMD issues red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in six Odisha districts
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in six districts of Odisha—Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Kalahandi, and Rayagada—on 23 and 24 September
• This is due to a low-pressure area over the north Andaman Sea that has moved into the Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify into a deep depression. Additionally, an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for 16 districts, and a yellow warning for heavy rainfall for others during the period from 22 to 24 September. Squally winds with speeds of 55-65 km/h, gusting to 75 km/h, are likely along the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts during this time.
Impact & Risks
The heavy rainfall and squally winds are expected to impact coastal and inland areas of Odisha and parts of north Andhra Pradesh. Flooding, waterlogging, and disruption to transportation and daily activities are likely in the affected districts. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until 24 September due to hazardous conditions. The Odisha government has placed district collectors on high alert to manage potential emergencies.
