The drought has led to significant agricultural losses, with Karnataka reporting ₹60,000 crore in crop damages. In Andhra Pradesh, over 5 lakh hectares of farmland remain unsown due to insufficient rainfall. Maharashtra's Marathwada region, which experienced 35% less rainfall, is also severely affected. The crisis has contributed to rising food inflation, which reached 7.74% in September, and a 108% year-on-year increase in onion prices. Additionally, water shortages have led to measures such as a 10% water cut in Pune since 15 October. The long-term depletion of groundwater and the degradation of water bodies exacerbate the situation, posing risks to food security and livelihoods.
