Uneven Monsoon Threatens Spice Production in Southern India
Uneven Monsoon Threatens Spice Production in Southern India
IN · Published Oct 21, 2026
• Southern India is experiencing uneven monsoon rainfall and persistent soil moisture shortages, which are significantly impacting spice production.
• Major spice-growing states such as Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu are facing challenges in crop development due to adverse weather conditions.

Impact & Risks

The uneven monsoon is causing reduced yields for key spices, including turmeric, red chillies, and cumin, which could lead to higher prices for consumers and food processors. Wholesale prices for turmeric and dry red chillies have already increased by 23.37% and 35.96%, respectively, year-on-year in September. Garlic prices have nearly doubled during the same period. These price hikes are contributing to elevated food inflation, which rose to 7.74% in September. Export demand and low carry-over stocks are exacerbating the situation, potentially affecting both domestic availability and international trade.
