Karnataka Faces Severe Water and Electricity Shortages Amid Worsening Drought
IN · Published Sep 16, 2026
Karnataka is grappling with a severe drought, with over 200 of its 239 taluks affected, according to Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
The state has declared 101 taluks as drought-hit, with 25 more likely to be added.

Impact & Risks

The drought is expected to cause a severe shortage of drinking water and electricity, affecting both urban and rural populations. Farmers are particularly vulnerable due to extensive crop damage and declining groundwater levels. The high cost of electricity procurement may also strain the state’s financial resources. Additionally, the drought could exacerbate socio-economic challenges, including water conflicts and reduced agricultural output.
