Noctilucent clouds, one of the rarest atmospheric phenomena, are now visible in the northern hemisphere.
These clouds form in the mesosphere, approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) above Earth's surface, and are composed of tiny ice water crystals.

Why It's Important?

Noctilucent clouds are primarily a visual phenomenon and pose no direct risks to the public. However, their occurrence is linked to specific atmospheric conditions, including extremely low temperatures in the mesosphere. Scientists also study these clouds as potential indicators of changes in the upper atmosphere, which could be influenced by climate change. For skywatchers, the main challenge is identifying these delicate, wispy formations in the twilight sky, as they can be easily missed without proper timing and clear weather conditions.
