Kerala Faces Power Cuts as Himachal Pradesh Supply Ends
IN · Published Oct 30, 2026
• Kerala is set to experience power load-shedding from November 1 due to a peak-hour shortage of up to 900 MW. The delay in approving a short-term power purchase agreement with Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board has led to this situation. Despite intermittent rain, peak-hour consumption has been around 4,900 MW, while the state's maximum capacity will drop to 4,200 MW from November
• The Electricity Regulatory Commission approved only 1,000 MW of the proposed 2,225 MW purchase, leaving a significant gap. The state had been receiving 900-1,200 MW from Himachal Pradesh since October 1, but the agreement to continue this supply remains pending.

Impact & Risks

The power cuts are expected to affect households and businesses across Kerala, particularly during peak hours between 6 PM and midnight. The shortage could disrupt daily activities and increase reliance on backup power sources, leading to higher costs. If the state experiences a dry spell, demand may rise further, exacerbating the situation. The delay in securing additional power supply highlights the challenges in managing energy needs during high-demand periods.
