Southwest Monsoon Delayed, Heavy Rain and Hail Expected Across India
IN · Published Jun 1, 2026
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a slight delay in the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala, which is now expected to arrive three to four days later than usual.
Despite this delay, various weather systems are causing significant rainfall, thundersqualls, and hailstorms across multiple regions in India.
Heavy rain is forecasted for Kerala, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, and South Interior Karnataka, while northeastern states like Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also on alert for isolated heavy showers.

Why It's Important?

The delayed monsoon onset and associated weather systems are expected to bring relief from heatwave conditions across India. However, the heavy rainfall and hailstorms pose risks of localized flooding, waterlogging, and potential damage to crops and infrastructure. Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal due to rough sea conditions. In Odisha and East Rajasthan, severe thundersqualls could disrupt transportation and power supply. The national capital region will see a drop in temperatures, providing some respite from the heat, but central and northwestern India may experience temperature fluctuations later in the week.
