India records 72% below normal rainfall as monsoon retreats further

• India experienced significantly below-normal rainfall on Monday, recording just 1.1 millimetres against the normal of 3.8 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
• The southwest monsoon season, which spans June to September, concluded with a nationwide rainfall total of 759.4 millimetres, marking a deficit of 12.6%.

Impact & Risks

The below-normal rainfall could impact agricultural activities and water availability in regions with 'large deficient' rainfall, such as northwest and central India. Farmers in these areas may face challenges in crop irrigation and yield. Additionally, the retreating monsoon signals the end of the primary rainy season, potentially leading to dry conditions in areas that rely heavily on monsoon rains for water resources. Urban areas with deficient rainfall may also experience increased pressure on water supply systems.
