Monsoon Arrives in Kerala After 3-Day Delay
IN · Published Jun 5, 2026
The southwest monsoon officially arrived in Kerala on June 4, 2026, three days later than its usual onset date of June 1, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
This marks the beginning of India's four-month rainy season, which is critical for Kharif crop sowing.

Why It's Important?

The delayed onset of the monsoon could impact the sowing of Kharif crops such as paddy, maize, and pulses, which rely heavily on timely rainfall. Additionally, the IMD's forecast of below-normal rainfall raises concerns about potential drought conditions, especially if the seasonal rainfall deficit exceeds 10%. In 2015, a similar scenario led to a 14% deficit in rainfall and widespread agricultural challenges. The development of El Niño conditions could further exacerbate the situation, potentially leading to uneven rainfall distribution across the country.
