Southwest Monsoon Arrives in Kerala; Below-Normal Rainfall Expected
IN · Published Jun 5, 2026
• The southwest monsoon officially began in Kerala on June 4, 2026, marking the start of India's rainy season, which typically spans June to September. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the monsoon's advancement into Kerala, parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the Bay of Bengal. This year's onset was delayed compared to the usual June 1 date and the IMD's earlier forecast of May
• The IMD has also revised its seasonal rainfall outlook, predicting below-normal rainfall at 90% of the long-period average (LPA) of 87 cm. Meteorologists attribute this to the potential development of El Niño conditions, which could lead to uneven rainfall distribution across the country.

Why It's Important?

The delayed monsoon and below-normal rainfall forecast could significantly impact agriculture, particularly the sowing of Kharif crops like rice, maize, and pulses. Regions dependent on monsoon rains may face water shortages, and the risk of drought looms if the rainfall deficit exceeds 10%. El Niño conditions, which are expected to strengthen by September, could further disrupt rainfall patterns, affecting both rural and urban water supplies.
