Northeast Monsoon to Bring Above-Normal Rainfall to Central and Southern Kerala
IN · Published Oct 13, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the onset of the northeast monsoon over southern India within the next two to three days, following the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon.
• Kerala, which experienced a deficient southwest monsoon this year, is expected to receive widespread rainfall between October 15 and 18, with isolated heavy showers during this period.

Impact & Risks

The forecasted above-normal rainfall in central and southern Kerala could lead to waterlogging and localised flooding in vulnerable areas, particularly in districts like Thiruvananthapuram, which traditionally receives high rainfall during the northeast monsoon. Northern districts may experience relatively subdued rainfall, potentially impacting agricultural activities reliant on consistent precipitation. Residents in areas prone to flooding should remain vigilant, as isolated heavy rainfall events are expected during the forecast period.
