Erratic Weather Drives Tomato Prices Higher Across India
IN · Published Oct 9, 2026
• Tomato prices have surged across India due to adverse weather conditions in September, including higher-than-normal temperatures, weak rainfall, and the spread of leaf curl virus.
• Key growing regions such as Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra have reported reduced yields and smaller fruit sizes.

Impact & Risks

The supply shortage has affected both wholesale and retail markets, with prices doubling or tripling in some areas. Retail prices in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad have risen to ₹50 per kg, compared to ₹20-25 per kg two weeks ago. Farmers have also reported reduced crop care due to earlier low prices, exacerbating the current shortage. The south-west monsoon's 13% deficiency, particularly in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, has further stressed the market. If weather conditions do not improve, prices could reach levels seen two years ago, when retail rates exceeded ₹100 per kg.
