Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Disrupt Life in Kolkata and South Bengal

• Kolkata experienced continuous overnight rainfall, leading to waterlogging in several areas, including Naktala and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Road. Thunderstorms with gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph are forecast for Tuesday, while coastal districts may see winds reaching 60 to 65 kmph. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for East Medinipur, West Medinipur, and Jhargram, warning of very heavy rainfall between 7 cm and 20 cm. Other districts, including Howrah, Hooghly, and North and South 24 Parganas, are also under heavy rain warnings.
Impact & Risks
The heavy rainfall has already caused waterlogging in parts of Kolkata, disrupting daily life and transportation. Vulnerable areas in North Bengal, such as Darjeeling and Kalimpong, face risks of landslides and further waterlogging due to persistent rain. Coastal districts are experiencing rough sea conditions, with wind speeds reaching up to 65 kmph, posing risks to fishermen and maritime activities. Residents in affected areas may face challenges related to flooding, power outages, and transportation delays.
