Severe Weather Outbreak Targets Central Plains with Tornadoes
US · Published May 19, 2026
A significant severe weather outbreak is underway across the Central Plains, with the NOAA Storm Prediction Center issuing a Level 4 out of 5 risk for parts of Kansas and southeastern Nebraska.
Violent EF-3+ tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds are the primary threats.
The severe weather is expected to impact over 80 million people across a 1,000-mile corridor stretching from North Texas to western New York.

Why It's Important?

The severe weather poses a significant risk to life and property, particularly in areas under the Level 4 risk, such as central and northeastern Kansas. Long-track tornadoes, capable of causing widespread destruction, are possible. Additionally, large hail and wind gusts up to 75 mph could result in structural damage, power outages, and hazardous travel conditions. A broader Level 3 risk extends into parts of Iowa, Missouri, and Oklahoma, with potential impacts including localized flooding and wind damage.
