Kashmir's agriculture and horticulture sectors have suffered significant losses due to repeated hailstorms in 2026, with damage estimated at 30%, according to the Kashmir Fruit Growers & Dealers Association.
The widespread destruction has left thousands of farmers and orchardists in financial distress, forcing many to seek loans.
Major damage was reported in areas such as Kulgam, Nehama, Shopian, Kreeri, Wagora, and Baramulla in April and May.

Why It's Important?

The hailstorms have impacted over 12 lakh people associated with Kashmir's horticulture sector, including farmers and orchardists. The financial strain caused by the destruction of crops and orchards has pushed many into debt. Key areas such as Kulgam, Shopian, and Baramulla have reported extensive damage, with some villages experiencing repeated hailstorm events. Without a crop insurance scheme, affected growers are left without compensation, exacerbating their financial challenges and threatening the region's agricultural sustainability.
