Southern California Braces for Monday's King Tides

California's highest tide of the year, known as a 'King Tide,' is expected to occur on Monday evening, reaching nearly 7.2 feet in elevation along the coast, including La Jolla.
These tides, which are predictable based on astronomical and water response data, provide a glimpse into the potential future impacts of rising sea levels.

Impact & Risks

The King Tides themselves are not expected to cause significant damage, as no storms are forecasted. However, the rising sea levels in Southern California, now accelerating, increase the risk of tidal flooding and coastal damage in the future. Airports and other low-lying coastal areas, such as those in San Diego and San Francisco, are particularly vulnerable. Historical data shows that peak high tides, when combined with storms, have caused significant damage, such as the 1998 Ventura floods.
