Himalayan Glacier Collapse Triggers Catastrophic Floods

On 26 August 2026, a massive slab of glacial ice and bedrock detached from the Langtang Lirung mountain crest on the Nepal-Tibet border.
The collapse generated a destructive slurry of rock, ice, and mud, moving at speeds of 180 km/h, devastating the Lhende Khola and Bhote Koshi river valleys.

Impact & Risks

The disaster has caused widespread destruction, washing away villages, roads, and infrastructure in the affected areas. The Himalayan region, spanning 11 Indian states and Union territories, is highly vulnerable to such events, placing nearly 700 million Indians at risk. The increasing frequency of glacial collapses and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) poses a significant threat to lives, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure, including hydropower projects. Climate change and geological instability are exacerbating these risks, with rising temperatures accelerating glacial melt and destabilising bedrock.
