A recent disaster in Nepal's Langtang region, involving a massive collapse of rock and ice, has raised concerns about the increasing instability of the Himalayan region due to climate change.
On 26 August 2026, a glacier and rock collapse triggered a flood that surged through the Lhende Khola, Bhote Koshi, and Trishuli river systems, causing widespread destruction.

Impact & Risks

The disaster in Nepal has resulted in over 1,000 deaths and thousands of missing persons, with 84,270 people affected across 17 municipalities in six districts. The flood mobilised approximately 2.2 million tonnes of debris, further complicating rescue and recovery efforts. The interconnected nature of the Himalayan river systems means that such events can have downstream impacts on Indian states, potentially affecting millions of people. The growing number of glacial lakes and the retreat of glaciers in the Indian Himalayas also pose significant risks, including glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
