A catastrophic glacier collapse near the Langtang Lirung mountain peak in the Himalayas triggered devastating floods on the Nepal-Tibet border last Wednesday.
The disaster unleashed a massive wall of water and mud, destroying villages, roads, bridges, and hydropower facilities.

Impact & Risks

The floods have severely impacted communities along the Trishuli River and other affected areas, with millions of people at risk of future glacial floods. The destruction of hydropower facilities has reduced Nepal's power capacity by 10%, and entire riverbanks may become uninhabitable. The disaster has left 2.2 million tonnes of debris, complicating rescue and rebuilding efforts. Among the missing are 592 foreign nationals, including Indian tourists and pilgrims. The climate crisis is exacerbating the frequency and severity of such events, posing long-term risks to the Himalayan region's stability and its inhabitants.
