Climate Change Linked to Deadly Nepal-Tibet Flood Disaster

A scientific study has revealed that climate change likely destabilised a Himalayan mountain slope, leading to a catastrophic collapse on 26 August
The event triggered a debris flood that killed over 1,300 people and left thousands missing. The collapse occurred near Langtang Lirung at an altitude of 5,150 metres, where approximately 2 sq km of rock wall and glacier ice fell 1,400 metres downhill. The World Weather Attribution (WWA) team found that human-induced warming has weakened mountain landscapes by shrinking glaciers and thawing permafrost, making slopes more prone to collapse. The disaster caused widespread destruction along the Trishuli River corridor, impacting settlements, roads, and hydropower infrastructure.

Impact & Risks

The flood has devastated northern Nepal, with over 1,300 fatalities and more than 5,000 people still missing. Infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and hydropower facilities, has been destroyed, and thousands of homes may need rebuilding. The collapse highlights the increasing vulnerability of Himalayan regions to climate-induced disasters, with warming temperatures destabilising mountain slopes and raising the risk of landslides and floods. Nepal has requested $20 million from the UN's Loss and Damage Fund to address the extensive damage, which is estimated to exceed $5 billion.
