• On 26 August 2026, a massive cryospheric collapse occurred in the Langtang Himal near Nepal's Rasuwa District and Tibet's Gyirong County.
• A hanging glacier, estimated at 100-200 million cubic metres, detached from its mountain headwall at 5,200 metres above sea level, plunging 1,200 metres into the valley below.

Impact & Risks

The glacier collapse caused widespread destruction, including the loss of over 650 lives and displacement of 93,000 people. The hyper-concentrated slurry obliterated riverine ecosystems, destroyed critical infrastructure, and disrupted hydropower generation. Agricultural lands were smothered by sediment, altering soil conditions and causing long-term ecological degradation. The disaster also highlighted the vulnerability of transboundary infrastructure in the Himalayan region, with impacts felt across Nepal and neighbouring countries.
