The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) has confirmed the first mosquitoes of the 2026 season to test positive for West Nile virus in Clark County, Nevada.
Initial detections were made in the 89121 ZIP code in southeast Las Vegas, with subsequent positive results reported in the 89169 and 89139 ZIP codes.

Impact & Risks

Residents in the affected ZIP codes—89121, 89169, and 89139—are at increased risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, including West Nile virus. While most infected individuals experience mild or no symptoms, severe cases can lead to neurological complications, hospitalization, or even death. The presence of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which can transmit other diseases like Zika and dengue, adds to the public health concern. Rainfall in the area has created standing water, a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes, potentially increasing the risk of further virus transmission.
