The Willow Fire near Leadville, Colorado, has grown significantly, expanding by nearly 1,000 acres in the past 24 hours, bringing its total size to 3,957 acres as of Sunday morning. Authorities have issued new evacuation orders for Halfmoon Road, a popular camping area and access point to Mount Massive, as well as the Lake Fork Trailer Park. Pre-evacuation warnings have been extended to areas south and southeast of the fire, including Twin Lakes and parts of State Highway
Fire crews are working to contain the blaze using controlled burns and aerial slurry drops, but the fire remains only 1% contained. The Leadville Regional Airport has been closed to non-emergency air traffic, and shelters have been set up in Buena Vista and Battle Mountain High School. The fire, which began on June 28, is fueled by historic dryness and record-low fuel moisture levels.

Impact & Risks

The rapid growth of the Willow Fire poses significant risks to residents, visitors, and infrastructure in the affected areas. Mandatory evacuations have displaced individuals from Halfmoon Road and the Lake Fork Trailer Park, while pre-evacuation warnings have created uncertainty for those in nearby communities. The fire's proximity to popular recreational areas and critical roadways, such as State Highway 82, could disrupt travel and tourism. The fire's expansion into areas with dry vegetation increases the risk of further spread, potentially endangering more lives and property.
