Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Los Angeles Amid Tropical Humidity
US · Published Sep 9, 2026
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for Los Angeles County, including the San Gabriel Valley, effective from 8 AM to 8 PM on Wednesday, September 9,
This warning follows a Heat Advisory that began on Tuesday morning and will continue through Thursday evening. The region is experiencing unusually high humidity due to lingering tropical moisture from former Hurricane Marie, which has combined with a high-pressure system to create dangerous heat conditions. Temperatures are expected to peak at 98°F (36.7°C) on Wednesday, with heat index values exceeding 100°F (37.8°C) due to dew points reaching near-record levels of 77°F (25°C). Overnight lows will remain in the low 70s°F (21-22°C), providing little relief from the heat. Scattered thunderstorms and heavy downpours were reported Tuesday morning, with lightning temporarily closing Los Angeles County beaches.

Impact & Risks

The combination of high temperatures and extreme humidity poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those without access to air conditioning. The elevated dew points will make it harder for the body to cool itself, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. The National Weather Service warns that the Extreme Heat Warning conditions are hazardous for everyone, not just sensitive groups. Additionally, thunderstorms and heavy downpours may lead to localized flooding, and lightning poses a risk to outdoor activities. Coastal areas are under high surf and rip current advisories, with ocean water quality concerns due to recent rainfall.
