Over the past century, nearly 2,000 kilometers of levees were constructed along the Mississippi River to prevent flooding and protect cities and farmland.
However, these barriers have inadvertently caused significant ecological damage by cutting off the flow of sediment to Louisiana's coastal wetlands.

Impact & Risks

The loss of Louisiana's coastal wetlands has increased vulnerability to tropical storms, rising sea levels, and saltwater intrusion. The sinking land and lack of sediment have led to the destruction of marsh plants and the transformation of coastal soils into open water. This has disrupted ecosystems and endangered local wildlife, including shrimp, crabs, and fish that rely on these habitats. Additionally, the loss of wetlands reduces natural storm surge protection for nearby communities, heightening the risk of flooding during hurricanes.
