Pineapple Express Atmospheric River Threatens Flooding in U.S. Southwest

• An atmospheric river, known as the 'Pineapple Express,' is expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of the Desert Southwest and Southern California over the Halloween weekend.
• This weather system, fuelled by a low-end atmospheric river originating near Hawaii, is predicted to deliver significant moisture to areas already saturated from recent rainfall.

Impact & Risks

The saturated ground from last week's rainfall, which ranged between 2 to 5 inches, increases the risk of flash flooding in affected areas. Localised flash floods are possible in western Texas, including Lubbock and Midland, during the first round of rain. A more serious flood threat exists for the Desert Southwest, including northern Arizona, New Mexico, southern Colorado, and southern Utah. Areas scorched by recent wildfires are particularly vulnerable to debris flows. Additionally, slippery travel conditions are expected in higher elevations due to snowfall, especially over mountain passes in the Sierra Nevada.
