Maharashtra Faces Severe Drought Amid Rainfall Deficits
IN · Published Oct 5, 2026
• Maharashtra is grappling with a severe drought following a delayed monsoon and significant rainfall deficits across more than 20 districts.
• According to a Saamana editorial, regions such as Solapur, Beed, Hingoli, and Jalna have experienced rainfall shortfalls ranging from 36% to 58%.

Impact & Risks

The drought has severely impacted farmers in Maharashtra, particularly in Marathwada, Vidarbha, and central regions. Crop losses and water shortages have led to financial distress, with reports of farmer suicides in some areas. The lack of rainfall has also caused drying of pastures, wells, and water bodies, leaving communities struggling to secure drinking water and fodder for livestock. The situation is exacerbated by unusually high temperatures, which reached 36°C as early as mid-August.
