Maharashtra Declares Drought in 305 Talukas Amid Monsoon Deficit
IN · Published Oct 26, 2026
• Maharashtra has declared drought conditions in 305 talukas as of 14 October 2026, following an 18% monsoon rainfall deficit between June and September.
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that 20 out of the state's 36 districts experienced deficient rainfall, with Marathwada and Vidarbha being the most affected regions.

Impact & Risks

The drought has led to significant stress on water resources in Maharashtra, particularly in Marathwada and Vidarbha, which are experiencing severe deficits. The situation has resulted in reduced agricultural output, with a 1% decline in the overall sowing area for kharif crops. This could exacerbate food security concerns and economic challenges for farmers. Other states, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Rajasthan, have also declared droughts, highlighting the widespread impact of this year's weak monsoon.
