Hailstorm Season Peaks in India: February to May Impact on Agriculture
IN · Published Oct 5, 2026
• Hailstorms in India are most frequent between February and May, coinciding with the pre-monsoon and late-winter weather patterns.
• These storms are characterised by the formation of hailstones within towering cumulonimbus clouds, driven by strong updrafts and unstable atmospheric conditions.

Impact & Risks

Hailstorms pose a significant threat to Indian agriculture, particularly during the rabi crop season when wheat, mustard, and gram are maturing. A single storm can flatten crops, strip orchards, and cause quality loss due to fungal infections. In 2015, hailstorms affected over 22 lakh hectares in Haryana, 16.89 lakh hectares in Rajasthan, and 9.89 lakh hectares in Maharashtra. The patchy nature of hail damage makes it harder to assess losses, impacting farmers' livelihoods. Weak structures, such as kacha houses, electric poles, and billboards, are also at risk during these storms.
