South Asia Strengthens Climate Services with Regional Forum in Maldives
MV · Published Oct 30, 2026
• A week-long series of events was held in Malé, Maldives, from 25–30 April 2026 under the South Asia Hydromet Forum (SAHF) Climate Services initiative.
• The forum brought together climate experts, government officials, and sectoral representatives from nine South Asian countries, including India, to enhance seasonal forecasting capacity and develop the SASCOF-34 regional monsoon outlook.

Impact & Risks

The 2026 Southwest Monsoon outlook indicates below-normal rainfall in central and southern South Asia, including parts of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, which could impact agriculture and water resources. Conversely, normal to above-normal rainfall is expected in northwestern and northeastern South Asia, as well as island regions like the Maldives. These conditions may lead to challenges in disaster management, agriculture, and tourism sectors, particularly in areas prone to drought or flooding. The forum emphasised the need for actionable climate information to support decision-making and preparedness across sectors.
