• According to the National Park Service, most roads and entrances to Yellowstone National Park will close to regular vehicle traffic on November 1, 2026, as part of the park's annual winter preparations. The West, South, and East entrances, along with nearly all roads, will be closed to facilitate the transition to winter operations. The snowmobile and snowcoach travel season is set to begin on December 15,
• Visitors can still access the park during winter via the road connecting the North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, to the Northeast Entrance in Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana, which passes through Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction, and Lamar Valley. This route remains open year-round, weather permitting.

Impact & Risks

The closures will primarily affect visitors planning to drive through Yellowstone during the late fall and winter months. Limited road access and potential weather-related closures may disrupt travel plans. Visitors are advised to prepare for changing weather conditions, limited services, and possible road restrictions. Communities surrounding the park, such as Gardiner and Cooke City, remain open year-round and offer alternative recreational opportunities.
