Post-Monsoon Road Conditions in Himachal and Uttarakhand: Key Updates
IN · Published Oct 18, 2026
• The 2026 monsoon season has left significant impacts on road conditions in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
• According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), as of 11 August 2026, Himachal Pradesh had 259 roads blocked, with 157 fatalities and 257 people reported missing between 30 June and 9 August.

Impact & Risks

The aftermath of the monsoon has left many roads in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in precarious conditions, with loose and freshly cut slopes prone to landslides. In Himachal, the districts of Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba are particularly affected. In Uttarakhand, areas like Badrinath, Gangotri, and Kedarnath face risks of road closures due to snow and black ice, especially on shaded bends above 8,000 feet. Travellers should be cautious as road conditions can change rapidly, and police may impose restrictions such as allowing only 4x4 vehicles with snow chains on certain routes. The risk of being stranded is significant, particularly in high-altitude areas like Kunzum Pass and Rohtang Pass, which are expected to close for the winter by mid-November.
