The programme, which had been operational since 2008, provided critical air quality data across more than 80 embassies and consulates globally, particularly benefiting low- and middle-income countries. Satellite data indicates a 24-33% rise in pollution levels within months of the programme's termination, with Southeast Asian cities such as Manila, Rangoon, and Vientiane experiencing the highest spikes. Experts suggest the absence of monitoring may have reduced regulatory pressure on industries, leading to increased emissions.

The rise in air pollution poses serious health risks, particularly due to increased levels of PM2.5 particles, which can enter the lungs and bloodstream, causing respiratory and cardiovascular issues.
