The drought has left farmers in Maharashtra facing mounting losses, particularly in Marathwada and Vidarbha, where rainfall deficits have been acute. Crops such as soybean, maize, and cotton have been severely affected, with some districts receiving barely half of their normal monsoon rainfall. Soil moisture depletion due to prolonged dry spells has exacerbated the situation, leaving rain-fed crops vulnerable during critical growth stages. The drought declaration impacts 16 talukas in Yavatmal, 15 in Jalgaon, and 14 each in Nanded, Amravati, and Nagpur. The broader picture is concerning, with 84.1% of Maharashtra's land area under dry or drought conditions as of 23 September, according to the IIT-Gandhinagar’s India Drought Monitor.
