North Iowa Experiences Wettest Week of Growing Season Amid Storms
US · Published Aug 19, 2026
North Iowa endured one of its wettest weeks of the growing season, with widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and a derecho impacting the region.
According to the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report, flash flooding occurred in some areas, while corn and soybean development continued to outpace last year’s progress.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall and flash flooding disrupted agricultural activities, leaving farmers with only 3.3 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.1 days the same week last year. While topsoil and subsoil moisture levels improved, excessive rain in some areas may have caused localized crop stress. However, corn and soybean conditions remain strong, with 78% rated good to excellent. The derecho and severe storms posed risks to infrastructure and transportation, particularly in eastern Iowa.
