The County of Maui is actively preparing for potential impacts from Tropical Storm Lala, which is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane as it moves west-northwest toward the Hawaiian Islands.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Hurricane Watch is in effect for Hawai‘i Island, with impacts expected by early Saturday.

Impact & Risks

The primary risks from Tropical Storm Lala include flash flooding, heavy rainfall, and storm surges, particularly in flood-prone and coastal areas of Maui County. Vulnerable regions previously affected by Kona Low storms earlier this year are at heightened risk. Dangerous winds and large waves are also expected as the storm strengthens. Residents in Lahaina, Wailuku, Makawao, Hāna, Moloka‘i, and Lāna‘i should be prepared for potential disruptions, including power outages and traffic signal malfunctions. Emergency response times may be delayed, and crimes committed during the emergency proclamation will face enhanced penalties.
