Reservoir Water Levels and Flow Data Across India
Reservoir Water Levels and Flow Data Across India
IN · Published Sep 1, 2026
The Indian Meteorological Service (IMS) has released updated data on the water levels, storage capacities, and inflow/outflow rates of major reservoirs across India.
Key reservoirs such as Mettur, Krishna Raja Sagar, Kabini, and others are currently operating below their full capacity.

Impact & Risks

The reduced water levels in several reservoirs could impact agricultural irrigation, drinking water supply, and hydroelectric power generation in the affected regions. For example, the Papanasam reservoir in Tamil Nadu is at 70.85 feet, significantly below its full depth of 143 feet, with storage at only 1,659 M.Cft. This could lead to water shortages in downstream areas. Additionally, lower inflow rates in some reservoirs, such as Pechiparai and Perunchani, may exacerbate the situation. Conversely, reservoirs with higher outflow rates, like Sathanur, could face challenges in maintaining adequate storage levels for future needs.
