US · Published Jul 16, 2026
Smoke from multiple wildfires in Canada and Minnesota is significantly impacting air quality across Michigan.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has extended an Air Quality Alert statewide, initially issued for Wednesday, into Thursday and possibly Friday.

Impact & Risks

The deteriorating air quality poses health risks, particularly for sensitive groups such as children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions. Prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke can exacerbate asthma, heart disease, and other respiratory issues. Northern Michigan is experiencing the worst conditions, with ash fall and hazardous air quality levels reported. The American Heart Association warns that exposure to wildfire smoke may increase the risk of heart disease. Motorists crossing the Mackinac Bridge were advised to reduce speeds and use low-beam headlights due to reduced visibility.
