Air Quality Alert Issued for Miami-Dade and Broward Counties
US · Published Jun 23, 2026
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Air Quality Alert for Miami-Dade and Broward counties, effective until 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 21,
The alert is primarily due to near-surface smoke from two wildfires in the region, which have collectively burned over 20,000 acres. The Florida Forest Service reported that the 'Quarry 2' wildfire has burned 19,003 acres and is fully contained, while the 'Well' wildfire has burned 1,525 acres and is 70% contained. Meteorologists warn that thunderstorm winds could worsen smoke dispersion into populated areas, leading to poor air quality overnight. Sensitive groups are advised to limit outdoor activities and seek cleaner indoor air if symptoms arise.

Impact & Risks

The alert primarily affects individuals who are unusually sensitive to air quality changes, such as those with respiratory conditions. Exposure to smoke and poor air quality can exacerbate symptoms like coughing, throat irritation, and difficulty breathing. The combination of wildfire smoke and a concurrent heat advisory in Miami-Dade County increases health risks, particularly for outdoor workers, children, and the elderly. Residents in affected areas should take precautions to minimize exposure.
