Flash Flood Threat Persists in US Southwest; Coastal Flood Alerts in Southeast
US · Published Oct 26, 2026
• The US Southwest continues to face a flash flood threat due to heavy rainfall over the weekend, with areas from western Texas to southwest Kansas under a level 2 out of 4 flood risk on Sunday.
• Rainfall rates in some parts of the region could reach up to 2 inches per hour, exacerbating the risk of flash flooding, especially in areas with already saturated ground.

Impact & Risks

In the Southwest, the saturated ground from consecutive days of heavy rain has lowered the threshold for flash flooding, posing risks to communities in western Texas, southwest Kansas, and parts of New Mexico. On Saturday, the San Juan River in New Mexico reached its highest crest since 1935, causing significant flooding in Shiprock. In the Southeast, coastal areas from Florida to the Carolinas are at risk of minor to moderate flooding during high tide, with major flooding possible in some locations. Rough surf, rip currents, and waves up to 12 feet are also expected, creating hazardous conditions for coastal residents and visitors.
