• West Texas and southeast New Mexico are bracing for another day of extreme heat on Thursday, August 20,
• High temperatures are forecasted to reach triple digits across the region, with Midland and Odessa expected to hit 101°F (38.3°C). Mountain areas will see slightly cooler highs in the mid-90s (around 35°C). Winds will be light, coming from the south at 5-15 mph, with occasional gusts exceeding 20 mph. Skies will remain sunny to mostly sunny, and rain chances are minimal, with less than a 10% chance of isolated showers in southeast New Mexico and the extreme northern Permian Basin late Thursday evening. Overnight lows will range from the upper 60s to upper 70s (20-26°C), accompanied by mostly clear skies and light breezes.

Impact & Risks

The extreme heat poses risks of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, particularly for those spending extended periods outdoors. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers, are at higher risk. The lack of significant rain and persistent high-pressure conditions will exacerbate the heat, with temperatures potentially exceeding 105°F (40.6°C) in some areas by the end of next week.
