Minnesota Faces 3-Day Air Quality Alert Amid Wildfires and Heat Dome
US · Published Jul 16, 2026
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has issued a 3-day air quality alert for much of Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, due to wildfire smoke and a heat dome.
The alert, initially set to expire Friday at 11 a.m., may be extended.

Impact & Risks

The hazardous air quality and extreme heat are expected to exacerbate health risks, particularly for individuals with heart or lung conditions, pregnant women, children, and older adults. The MPCA warns that the combination of heat and smoke can increase the risk of respiratory infections, asthma, and heat-related illnesses. Emergency rooms in the region have already reported a rise in heat-related cases, including dizziness, fainting, and respiratory distress. Outdoor activities are strongly discouraged, and everyone is advised to minimize exposure to the poor air quality.
