77% of U.S. Sugar Crops Affected by Drought, USDA Reports
US · Published Sep 8, 2026
Drought conditions are intensifying across the United States, significantly impacting sugar beet and sugar cane crops.
According to the USDA, 77% of both sugar beet and sugar cane crops are now experiencing some level of drought, up from 75% the previous week.

Impact & Risks

The worsening drought is creating significant challenges for U.S. sugar producers and buyers. Limited water availability is affecting crop yields, leading to reduced market activity as sellers hesitate to commit to future contracts. This has caused domestic sugar prices to remain high, further exacerbated by a global rally in raw sugar futures. The drought's impact is particularly severe in states like Michigan, where only 45% of sugar beet crops are rated as good to excellent, compared to 83% the previous year. The situation poses risks to the agricultural sector and could lead to higher consumer prices for sugar and related products.
